This webinar will help employability advisors recognise how Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can affect an individual’s ability to engage with employment, and provide practical approaches to offer appropriate, person-centred support.

SAD is a form of depression that commonly affects people during autumn and winter, when reduced daylight can contribute to changes in mood, energy, sleep, motivation and concentration. For people seeking work, these symptoms can make it harder to maintain routines, attend appointments, complete applications, prepare for interviews or engage with training. For those already in work, SAD can affect attendance, productivity, concentration, confidence and overall wellbeing.

For people also living with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, such as back pain, arthritis or joint problems, the impact can be more significant. Pain, stiffness, fatigue and reduced mobility can overlap with SAD symptoms, potentially making everyday activities, travelling to centres and managing employability activities or in-work demands more challenging. For employability advisors, recognising that symptoms can fluctuate is important.

Topics covered:

  • Understand what SAD is and how it can affect individuals.
  • Recognise how SAD may impact confidence, communication and engagement in employment.
  • Understand how SAD can impact other health conditions such as MSK
  • Learn practical ways to provide appropriate support and guidance
